POV Pool’s ‘Action Saturday’ Gets Wild!

January 11th, 2014 seemed like just another Saturday morning for me at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. Sure, a few changes were taking place… I had decided that it was time to install an overhead camera mount to the ceiling for an additional point of view of our ‘action’ tables there. My decision to make some new changes to the format of POV Pool’s show was taking shape, streaming a new ‘Open Action’  show instead of  covering tournament action only. But to me, it was a pretty normal day consisting of me basically, doing a lot of work to try out something slightly different on my show.

So, I’m up on the top rung of a 6 foot ladder with a Makita Drill, installing the camera mount and my back pocket starts ringing. Good Lord! The timing of some people. It’s 10:30 in the morning and Hard Times is not even open yet. As I fumble around with Makita in one hand, ladder shaking underneath my feet  on top of table 1 and left hand reaching for my iphone 5, the front door of Hard Times starts banging! I pick up the phone.

Zach from Vegas: “WHERE YOU AT? YOU HUNGRY? LET US IN!”

Me: “Hold on a minute, Zach. I’m on a ladder with a screwgun!”

After a minute or so, I’m done! Bracket installed for POV’s overhead camera. Now I’m at sea level again so that I can open the front door, where Vegas Zach and Bobby Emmons are waiting anxiously outside.

Bobby: “ACTION!”

Me: What’s up, Bobby? Zach!”

Zach: “Yo, we are hungry where can we eat around here? When we get back Bobby needs a game!”

45 minutes later, it’s normal operations again and POV is streaming bright and early in the morning with A now, well fed, Bobby Emmons barking at strangers, Hard Times regulars and asking me to get him a game. At one point he even asked me what I want to do. I like Bobby. Bobby likes ACTION! Bobby = Action!

Bobby: “I’ll play ANYBODY, ANY GAME, for ANY AMOUNT!”

Bobby Got Action!

Emmons3Another 45 minutes later: Efren Reyes. Best all around pool player of our time. Most respected, most humble, most dangerous man to ever brandish a ‘Judd’ cue, enters the room just to hang out and get some ‘pitstop’ practice whilst on his way to New York for his highly publicized “Last Showdown” match with Earl Strickland. With Efren, is Francisco Bustamante, Tony Torres and owner of Stix Billiards – Alex Laoingo.

“This is a ridiculous coincidence!”, I think to myself. I’m already happy to see Bobby. I know today’s show will be something special when Bobby is around. He’s a natural talent, both on the table and on camera. I’m sure we can make a game with Him and Santos, or Louis Ulrich, possibly Damien Alishon or Sal Butera could come down. Ross Fregoso’s name was tossed around a few times too. But Bobby is neither humbled, afraid or even quiet when Efren walks in. Instead, Bobby is glazed over with $$ signs in his eyes, immediately thinking of and negotiating a game with “BATA”, which immediately, Bobby does.

Bobby Got Heart & Game!

Emmon4The short version of this tale is that Bobby had a rough ride on this day. He played 3 sets of One-Pocket with Efren Reyes. He got a ball spot of 10-7/9-6 from Efren in the first set for $500. A full, 9/6 spot in the second set for $2,500, and also a 9/6 spot during the final set of race to 7 games for $6,000.

Bobby lost all 3 sets…

He was mortified, he was disappointed, he was flabbergasted… And then… He immediately  requested a re- match, to take place in a few days at Pool Sharks in Las Vegas. It took about 11 minutes total to discuss before the next game was set for January 21st at Pool Sharks. This initial event was streamed live on my Ustream Channel for almost 7 hours. Myself, along with Spanky and our old school Hard Times regular who goes simply by the name, ‘Box’ commentated the matches.

All in all, Bobby did show some fantastic moves and exhibited moments of greatness that a novice player merely dreams of having yet, in the end, the outcome of this match may have come down to Bobby’s  inability to really focus on the nuances of the game of One-Pocket to the extent that a master like Efren is.

Efren3“The bottom line is, the ‘kid’ is just being ‘out-classed’ right now.”, said BOX from the commentary booth just toward the end of the night.

What of the Re-Match?

As far as we know, this match is ON! POV Pool will drive to Las Vegas and stream it as a matinee price, PPV. If it runs over 8 hours we will charge for an additional 8 hours. This should pay for the bandwidth and my travel expenses. There is very little time to promote this event so I don’t expect huge numbers. Maybe, with your help, the word of mouth will spread, but I’m not going to count on it.

– Re-Match
