Since 1991 the Rum Runner Lounge in Las Vegas, Nevada has honored pool player and enthusiast, Andy Mercer, with an annual 9-ball bar box tournament.  For the past 25 years, this event has drawn the best pool players from across the country, and this year March 20th – 22nd is no different.  With 10 professional players entered this year and a full field, we wonder will Shane VanBoening win for the 5th year in a row?  Or will previous title holder Ismael Paez take it, or will newcomer Rodrigo “Edgie” Geronimo rob the field?   Other professional players include, the great Mike Massey, Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez, Max Eberle, Scott Frost and Jason Klatt.

2015-MercerFlyerREV4

This year’s event will be available to the masses to watch FREE on POV Pool!  Three days of pros battling it out on bar boxes.  The free stream is brought to you by the Rum Runner Lounge, Pool Sharks in Las Vegas, Kamui Tips, Tiger Products and ReaniMac. POV Pool also owes a huge ‘special thanks’ to Jeff Gray and Ryan Deberg who pulled a lot of strings to make this broadcast happen.

The ‘Home Of Champions’ Gears Up for Action!

On July 11th-13th and for the 5th year in a row, Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower will be hosting its annual ‘Hard Times 10-Ball Open’ tournament.. With $5,000 added money and POV Pool’s live streaming preparations underway, it’ll be another unforgettable event. Won by Carlo Biado last year, he bested Alex Pagulayan in a landslide final battle, 11 games to 1. Hard Times 10 Ball always attracts an assorted field of the best from all over the world and we can only guess who will be this year’s champion to rise to the top. Past top finishers of this event have been, Dennis Orcullo, Shane VanBoening, Ralf Souquet, Wang Can, Rodney Morris, Manny Chau, Max Eberle, Scott Frost and many others.

Confirmed So Far…

The internationally known pool promoter, author and tournament director, Jay Helfert has confirmed with POV Pool that Warren Kiamco and Dennis Orcullo are confirmed for this years event. Also, widely known to be an agent and manager for two other players whilst on the West Coast, we have a confirmation from Brook Thomason that Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes will also be competing. Reigning CSI, US Open 10-Ball Champion, Rodney Morris states that he will compete this year, just before flying to Japan for The Japan Open in Tokyo. And, there has been some discussion that Shane VanBoening may also make an appearance which, if this is the case, means it’s a matter of time before the rest will follow. No word yet as to whether we will be seeing any number of these 4 players: Ko Pin Yi, Ko Pin Chung, Chang Jun Ling and Cheng Yu Hsuan who are travelling from Taiwan to play in Las Vegas this year for the CSI, U.S. Open events. As they develop, more player and promotional updates can be found on The Hard Times 10-Ball’s, Facebook Event Page.

West State Billiards named as Main Sponsor!

The 2013 West Coast Swing Report!

Predictions of an extremely hot summer this year will welcome yet another swing of players ‘galore’ on the west coast of the United States. Normally occurring in springtime,  this 4th annual ‘West Coast Swing’ has now been moved to the summertime in order to work around the ‘BCA National Championships’ schedule which takes place in late July at the newly contracted Rio All Suites Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. That being said, the ‘swing’ will still accomodate a trifecta of major events shared by the states of California and Nevada and will boast a prize fund of at least $80,000 between them.

Different Players Anticipated

This years’ attendance at these events should be something to note due to the newly formed World Professional Billiard League or WPBL, (The Home Of Bonus Ball). With 12 teams of pro players from all over the world and with the ‘swing’ right in the middle of the ‘Bonus Ball’ broadcast schedule, it seems we should see a lively yet mixed attendance of top players scheduling these events between their ‘on’ and ‘off” time of Bonus Ball appearances. For instance, for an event in early July, Bonus Ball teams’ Chicago Rockets (Mika Immonen, Rodney Morris, Raj Hundal, Karl Boyes) should be available to play The West Coast Challenge event in Mountain View, but Bonus Ball would prevent them from appearing at Hard Times Billiards on the following week. At the Hard Times 10-Ball event, we might see a new swing of players from Bonus Ball teams, ‘Atlanta Scorpions’ (Johnny Archer, Dennis Hatch, Shannon Daulton) or the ‘Houston Hustlers’ (Jeremy Jones, Justin Hall and Chip Compton). As a likely result of this rather interesting schedule of events, a ‘winning sweep’ of The West Coast Swing by a small handful of players should not be anticipated. With 12 teams of bonus ball players (40 players in all) in Las Vegas during the swing, you can be assured that 40 top pros are already deciding how to best spend their off-time at Bonus Ball to keep their games in top shape. It is highly recommended that players and readers read and contribute to pertinent forums in order to follow the players and tournament schedules.

Shane VanBoening Double Dips The Rum-Runner!

A big congratulations to Shane VanBoening and Jeremy Jones, who took 1st and 2nd place, respectively this weekend, earning the top two prizes of $6,000 and $3,000 at the “Andy Mercer Memorial 9-Ball Tournament”!

The Rum Runner Lounge in Las Vegas – home of ‘The Andy Mercer Memorial 9 Ball Tournament’, celebrated its 23rd annual, 3-day event to a packed house of players and spectators, gunning for yet another weekend of the toughest ‘bar-box’, 9 ball performances of our time.

DanielBJeremyJonesMercer

A 64-player field, studded with an almost equal ratio of professional giants and hopeful killers in their wake, Mosconi Cup veteran and 2003, U.S. Open Champion, Jeremy Jones from Baytown, Texas took the high road to the Hot-Seat of the event, facing off with Shane VanBoening on the final day, only to get ‘double-dipped’ in two races to 6, ending in scores of 6-3 and 6-0. Shane’s electrifying display of cue ball control and one lucky shot on the 7-ball kept Jeremy in his chair for most of the finals. Jeremy’s visits to the table were somewhat undeserved, having only a few opportunities to kick, play safe or push away.

Donnie and Johnny Meet The Giants!

3rd place winner, Donnie Branson looked very promising on day three and facing off with with both winners. First, knocking Shane to the one-loss side (6-2), only to follow up with his first loss to Jeremy Jones (6-4). Donnie’s next match ended with Shane serving a rather bitter pill of 6 games in a row (6-0), reducing Donnie to the 3rd place position.

5th/6th place winner, Johnny Kang’s draw was tough form the ‘get-go’, immediately defeating jim Blakeman (6-2) and Sal Butera (6-5) on Day 1, followed by Frank ‘The Barber’ Almanza (6-5) on Day 2. On day 3, Johnny suffered his first loss to Donnie Branson (6-2), only to forge ahead two more wins to Ramin Bahktiari (6-5), Oscar Dominguez (6-3) and finally losing to Ronnie Alcano (6-5)

Watch Out For The Volcano!

4th place winner, Ronnie ‘Volcano’ Alcano had some well deserved wins against King-Kong’ (6-5) and the ‘Giant Killer’, Ray Skenandore (6-5) and then to Johnny Kang on the one-loss (6-5). Ronnie was untouched until day three, took his first loss against Jeremy Jones (6-4) and finally his second loss to a rather determined Shane (6-3) who had nothing on his mind but to defend his 2-time consecutive championship title.

Max Runs 6 Straight Racks After King-King Refuses The Push!

7th/8th place winner Max Eberle, astounded the crowd with 6 straight racks, run from the break against Bernardo ‘King-Kong’ Chavez, who refused a push-out by Max on the first rack. King-Kong sat Screen shot 2013-03-26 at 8.26.35 PMin his chair, writhing and hopeful for a shot, getting up only to rack the balls each time Max closed out. This match was streamed live, commentated by Daniel Busch and Lenny Marshall and can be viewed on demand at POV Pool’s YouTube Channel.

Max’s historic performance on POV Pool was a well deserved one, after losing in the first round of play on day one to Donnie Branson (6-5), then beating Brian Miller (6-2), King Kong (6-0), Ismael ‘Morro’ Paez (6-0), Thomas Butler (6-0), Fach Garcia (6-1), Mitch Ellerman (6-2) and then losing to Ernesto Dominguez (6-4).

Congrats To Team Mexico!

Happy Birthday Oscar Dominguez, who turns 28 today! Oscar earned his 7th/8th place position just underneath his father’s finish at 5th/6th place. Oscar’s wins included a streamed match with Brett Lee (6-3). He then beat Ramin Bahktiari  (6-1), Fach Garcia (6-1), lost to Shane (6-2), eliminated Sal Butera from the one-loss (6-3), and finally getting ousted by Johnny Kang (6-3).

Also hit early to the one-loss was Ernesto Dominguez, who notched his belt a number of tough matches against Southwest Cues’, Al Lawrence (6-4), Frank Almanza (6-5), POV Pool’s night-time commentator, Joshua Edgar (6-2), Max Eberle (6-5) until finally losing to Shane in a hill/hill match.

Live Streamed Matches

Sponsored by Kamui Tips, The Orange County APA, John English and The Public House 1739, there were almost 40 recorded matches which were streamed live by Daniel Busch of www.povpool.com, which will begin posting to YouTube sometime next week. POV Pool would like to thank it’s commentators for some excellent coverage of this event: Justin Acker, James Murphy, Stacy Allsup, Jeremy Jones, Mitch Ellerman, Lenny Marshall, Robert Leblanc, Frank Almanza, Jimmy ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ Mataya, Joshua Edgar’s, ‘POV Pool, After Dark’ show, Don McClelland, John English and many, many other players and spectators who joined in, to say hello on the stream and pay tribute to the late, Andy Mercer, who may very well be smiling upon us.

Always a packed house! Always a cast of characters!

One of the most prestigious independent events for any professional player to chalk up, is the ‘Andy Mercer Memorial 9-Ball Tournament’. Aptly named, “The Rum Runner”, which takes in the southeast corner of Las Vegas at the Rum Runner Lounge on Tropicana Ave, this 64 player field is an event which consistently hosts a tapestry of the best pool players in recorded history. Past winner’s include, the late Danny Medina (’93 & 2000), Jose Parica (’98), Warren Kiamko, Jim Blakeman (’94, ’04 & ’05), Ismael ‘Morro’ Paez (’99, ’06 & ’07), Joe Alvarez (’94), Ernesto Dominguez (’10) and some of the younger greats of our time like Shane VanBoening (’09, ’11 & ’12) and Brian Parks (’08).

Jim Blakeman: The finishing touches on Rum Runner tables.

Jim Blakeman: The finishing touches on Rum Runner tables.

Since 1991, Andy Mercer’s memory has been celebrated by what seems to be an ‘inner circle’ of top players who visit year after year.  “The Rum Runner has been attended by almost half of its field since it began 23 years ago.”, says 3 time Rum Runner winner, Jim Blakeman. “It has become a reunion of players and friends… A truly special event.”

Free Live Stream!

This year, the venue’s owner Geno Hill has given permission to allow the event to be live-streamed by Daniel Busch and Point Of View Pool, which will be made available for the public to view for free on www.povpool.com. It will be a 3 day stream, which could possibly run 24 hours a day from POV Pool’s Ustream Channel and includes a ‘chat’ function for viewers to interact with commentators.

Kamui_logoBlackAPA Logo-Wade

Sponsored by Kamui Tips and The Orange County American Pool Player’s Association, the live stream will provide coverage of all matches on Table #1 of the Rum Runner’s four tournament tables and start everyday at 12pm.

Real-time player statistics and performance analysis will also be provided by Pool-Trax and it’s owner, Donn Espinoza.

We Miss You, Andy Mercer!

Andy Mercer was a longtime pool player and enthusiast, who emerged in the public eye in the early 70’s after forming the ‘South Nevada 9-Ball Tavern’s Association’, which then came under control by Jim Blakeman and wife Lorraine, shortly after Andy’s passing from a heart attack at the age of 59. His longtime friend and Rum Runner owner, Geno Hill, started the Andy Mercer Memorial 9-Ball Tournament in 1991.
