Efren On The Move To Hard Times, Sunday!

February 2nd, 2014

Hard Times Billiards – Bellflower, CA

Efren Expected This Afternoon!

Efren3

A close source to Efren Reyes has confirmed today that he is expected to arrive at LAX Airport this morning and will be making his rounds at Hard Times Billiards, sometime early in the afternoon. As luck would have it, POV Pool was already scheduled to live stream the 1st Sunday 9-Ball tournament, which means that we will most certainly get a glimpse of Efren and possibly more, since this particular tournament is always known for such high caliber attendance and competition. If nothing else, maybe some great ‘charity’ action or a practice session for Efren, but may I remind readers that when he was here 3 weeks ago, we were treated to over 7 hours of some of the best pool this room has seen since July 2013’s, Hard Times 10-Ball Tournament.

Anything’s possible when ‘Bata’ is in town, which means that POV Pool’s eyes are on ‘you know who’! Live streaming starts at 12PM PST on this website. If you work on Sunday, call the boss and make an excuse. Leave the laundry in the hamper and let the dishes wait! What’s that event with the brown oval ball? Oh, the Super Bowl?

Efren’s in town!

Live streaming will be free until 2:30 pm PST and will convert to a Pay-Per-View stream thereafter.  Purchase your PPV Tickets now at http://www.povpool.com/action/ for only $8.

POV Pool Announces a new, ‘Live Stream, Revenue Sharing’ Business Model!

January 30th, 2014

Point Of View Pool Headquarters, Los Angeles

Introducing, ‘LSRS’ / Live Stream, Revenue Sharing!

Beginning this February, Point Of View Pool at www.povpool.com is thrilled to announce a new ‘Pay-Per-View’ concept that offers viewers more live streaming events with players and their host venues benefiting directly through a percentage of the POV Pool’s, Pay-Per-View Profits.

It’s time players get paid directly for their talent and star-power through ‘LSRS’.

I am expanding my vision of Pool and Billiards streaming so that players and venues can partner with POV Pool for an any event and enjoy the financial benefits that they deserve. I am creating a Pay-Per-View model that creates incentives for players and venues to enter POV Pool’s live streamed events, and profit directly from the viewers that they draw for each event. This enables the viewers to directly contribute monetarily to their favorite Players and venues for any hosted event.

For example: a monthly tournament that is usually $500 added and streamed for $8 to POV Pool’s subscribers, will now grow the payouts directly related to the increased draw of the players, host venues and viewers. More Players and More Viewers will grow payouts based on PPV attendance.

Simply put, The more viewers that POV ‘Players’ and Host Venues draw, the more they get paid! Everyone benefits directly!

It is my theory that this model (LSRS), will set a new precedent for live streamers everywhere. I expect and encourage other streamers to follow the same model, which will not only create a direct incentive for players to promote their own events and brands, but will also encourage unity and free competition amongst a growing number of other streamers. Just as I have been generous to all venues and players with my time and resources, it is my goal for the future of pool to remain generous with the profits of viewership.

What’s also exciting is, the PPV streams will now be privately hosted and streamed virtually ‘AD FREE’ to viewers, adding to yet another long list of improvements POV Pool has made to it’s presentations in the past 3 years.

The Facts

After 3 years in business as a live presenter of hundreds of events and matches, POV Pool’s main sources of income has been generated through viewer donations, limited sponsorships and service fees to venues. Even though support is growing, it seems apparent in 2014 that that the billiard industry as a whole can not financially sustain a budget needed to produce a quality live stream broadcast.

It’s a question of simple economics. As with the rest of the billiard industry, i.e.; the table manufacturers, pool halls, leagues and tournaments… they are sustained by pool players and pool enthusiasts, who put coins into the pay tables, purchase cues and billiard equipment, join leagues and enter into events… the phenomenon of live-streaming will merely become another product, which consumers can enjoy as part of the tapestry of their pool lifestyle.  And, just as the rest of the industry sponsors billiard events and tournaments, supporting live streamed events on a PPV basis, will now provide the streamer with enough leverage to pay the streaming talent directly and also sponsor its own events.

‘LSRS’ Starts this February

You can immediately order tickets for future events on POV Pool’s website at:http://www.povpool.com/action/  – Pricing will vary based on certain events, but should be affordable for most PPV audiences.

The first scheduled Pay-Per-View event will occur from Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California on February 1st & 2nd. It will be the “Hard Times 1st Saturday and Sunday” Tournaments of the month. Saturday will be One-Pocket and Sunday will be 9-Ball. The show will also be advertisement ‘free’. The pricing for this event and for future events will generally cost less than a matinee price at your local movie theater and will usually run for over 6 hours through to the final match of the event. Some proceeds of this event will be immediately added towards the day’s prize fund, with an additional percentage held back for future events. An announcement as to how much is being added will be made immediately during or sooner than the semi finals match. 1st Sun Hard TimesArtistic

I would expect to see a typical, $500 added event to immediately grow by at least $100 in prize money, at which point, we will see it grow larger from there. Ideally, POV Pool would like to see ALL prize funds for events grow to double in size with, also enough being held back to use for even larger, POV Pool sponsored events.

POV Pool’s ‘Action Saturday’ Gets Wild!

January 11th, 2014 seemed like just another Saturday morning for me at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. Sure, a few changes were taking place… I had decided that it was time to install an overhead camera mount to the ceiling for an additional point of view of our ‘action’ tables there. My decision to make some new changes to the format of POV Pool’s show was taking shape, streaming a new ‘Open Action’  show instead of  covering tournament action only. But to me, it was a pretty normal day consisting of me basically, doing a lot of work to try out something slightly different on my show.

So, I’m up on the top rung of a 6 foot ladder with a Makita Drill, installing the camera mount and my back pocket starts ringing. Good Lord! The timing of some people. It’s 10:30 in the morning and Hard Times is not even open yet. As I fumble around with Makita in one hand, ladder shaking underneath my feet  on top of table 1 and left hand reaching for my iphone 5, the front door of Hard Times starts banging! I pick up the phone.

Zach from Vegas: “WHERE YOU AT? YOU HUNGRY? LET US IN!”

Me: “Hold on a minute, Zach. I’m on a ladder with a screwgun!”

After a minute or so, I’m done! Bracket installed for POV’s overhead camera. Now I’m at sea level again so that I can open the front door, where Vegas Zach and Bobby Emmons are waiting anxiously outside.

Bobby: “ACTION!”

Me: What’s up, Bobby? Zach!”

Zach: “Yo, we are hungry where can we eat around here? When we get back Bobby needs a game!”

45 minutes later, it’s normal operations again and POV is streaming bright and early in the morning with A now, well fed, Bobby Emmons barking at strangers, Hard Times regulars and asking me to get him a game. At one point he even asked me what I want to do. I like Bobby. Bobby likes ACTION! Bobby = Action!

Bobby: “I’ll play ANYBODY, ANY GAME, for ANY AMOUNT!”

Bobby Got Action!

Emmons3Another 45 minutes later: Efren Reyes. Best all around pool player of our time. Most respected, most humble, most dangerous man to ever brandish a ‘Judd’ cue, enters the room just to hang out and get some ‘pitstop’ practice whilst on his way to New York for his highly publicized “Last Showdown” match with Earl Strickland. With Efren, is Francisco Bustamante, Tony Torres and owner of Stix Billiards – Alex Laoingo.

“This is a ridiculous coincidence!”, I think to myself. I’m already happy to see Bobby. I know today’s show will be something special when Bobby is around. He’s a natural talent, both on the table and on camera. I’m sure we can make a game with Him and Santos, or Louis Ulrich, possibly Damien Alishon or Sal Butera could come down. Ross Fregoso’s name was tossed around a few times too. But Bobby is neither humbled, afraid or even quiet when Efren walks in. Instead, Bobby is glazed over with $$ signs in his eyes, immediately thinking of and negotiating a game with “BATA”, which immediately, Bobby does.

Bobby Got Heart & Game!

Emmon4The short version of this tale is that Bobby had a rough ride on this day. He played 3 sets of One-Pocket with Efren Reyes. He got a ball spot of 10-7/9-6 from Efren in the first set for $500. A full, 9/6 spot in the second set for $2,500, and also a 9/6 spot during the final set of race to 7 games for $6,000.

Bobby lost all 3 sets…

He was mortified, he was disappointed, he was flabbergasted… And then… He immediately  requested a re- match, to take place in a few days at Pool Sharks in Las Vegas. It took about 11 minutes total to discuss before the next game was set for January 21st at Pool Sharks. This initial event was streamed live on my Ustream Channel for almost 7 hours. Myself, along with Spanky and our old school Hard Times regular who goes simply by the name, ‘Box’ commentated the matches.

All in all, Bobby did show some fantastic moves and exhibited moments of greatness that a novice player merely dreams of having yet, in the end, the outcome of this match may have come down to Bobby’s  inability to really focus on the nuances of the game of One-Pocket to the extent that a master like Efren is.

Efren3“The bottom line is, the ‘kid’ is just being ‘out-classed’ right now.”, said BOX from the commentary booth just toward the end of the night.

————————–

What of the Re-Match?

As far as we know, this match is ON! POV Pool will drive to Las Vegas and stream it as a matinee price, PPV. If it runs over 8 hours we will charge for an additional 8 hours. This should pay for the bandwidth and my travel expenses. There is very little time to promote this event so I don’t expect huge numbers. Maybe, with your help, the word of mouth will spread, but I’m not going to count on it.

————————————-

Pool’s new rising star from the Philippines, Carlo Biado, will be traveling to the United States next week for several months and has very quickly been scheduled to headline in an action packed, 2-day double-header billiards match against The Mosconi Cup, ‘Team USA’ player, Dennis Hatch on February 18th, 2014 at 5:00 pm PST (February 19th, 9:00 am UTC). The event will be a an exclusive, live broadcast available all over the world on Point Of View Pool’s, Internet live-streaming website at www.povpool.com via ‘Pay Per View’.

Playing the best of 49 games of 10-Ball, or a ‘race to 25’ games, against Dennis Hatch, Carlo may have his hands full against this veteran player, who has been known to compete at Hard Times Billiards as far back as 20 years and who was recently streamed online by POV Pool, beating Francisco Bustamante during the Hard Times 10-Ball event in July 2013. Meanwhile, we are sure that Biado will have no worries taking on “The Hatchetman!”, who played at the same event and placed 1st out of 104 players, besting the world renowned, Alex Pagulayan, 11 games to 1 in the finals.

Carlo’s match, will be the headliner of 2 matches, the first of which is an ‘undercard’ match between POV Pool’s owner, Daniel Busch and world renowned, British pool/snooker coach and billiards instruction author, Lee Brett (“The Secret Art Of Pool”).

POV Pool’s owner, Daniel Busch states, “(Carlo) Biado is truly an amazing talent and a great gift to the pool community! This will be the 2nd installment of an ‘Action Match’ series, produced by POV Pool. I am honored to showcase some of the world’s greatest talents coming out of the Philippines and from all over the world! POV Pool is working very hard to create the best possible production and high quality entertainment by broadcasting with multiple, hi-definition cameras and featuring one of pool’s star commentators, Jay Helfert.”

Additional Matches and details provided below…

Day – 1  / Lee Brett vs Daniel Busch!

Famed pool coach and former ‘Bonus Ball’ referee, Lee Brett has agreed to compete against Daniel Busch of POV Pool in a 9-Ball battle for a ‘winner take all’ purse of $2,000. It’ll be a fast and loose race of the best of 59 games and will start at 5:oo pm Pacific Standard Time / 8:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. Commentators Jay Helfert and Beau Runningen will commentate the match and a referee has yet to be named for the event. Matches of this proportion in the U.S. are traditionally a casual affair but Point Of View Pool is mandating that players bring a touch of class to this event by competing in formal attire. It will be reminiscent of the old school of billiards and today’s snooker competitions. Yes folks, vests and bow-ties will be required. Additional cameras and support staff are also being used to capture the drama for viewers.

Day – 2  / Dennis Hatch vs Carlo Biado!

Dennis Hatch, making a strong comeback in the pool-world as of late, he has competed in a handful of top independent events, such as the Crooks & Castles sponsored ‘Hard Times 10-Ball’ Tournament and recently played with Team USA in the 25th Annual Mosconi Cup Event in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Tuesday, February 18th, also at 5:00 pm PST, Dennis will be matching up with none other than the newest pool sensation from the Philippines, Carlo Biado in a grueling race to 25 games, playing 10-Ball – a ‘call pocket’ format ‘rotation’ game, which Carlo took the prize of 1st place in the aforementioned Crooks & Castles event.
