Mezz West State Tour: TOP GUN!

top gunAfter 11 events on the Mezz West State Tour, a total of 32 invited players came to Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA to compete in the year end event for its 12th and final event of Season 1. The invited players were chosen based off a points system based off the Camel Pro Tour rankings. The top players accumulated points based off their performances to play in a special year end event of $2000 added prize money plus the membership dues collected throughout the season which totaled to 5750 off of 231 total members. In addition, as a bonus, the top 16 ranked players did not pay an entry fee while the 17-32nd ranked players paid a standard $65 entry fee.

Rail ActionThe top half of the board was led by co founder of the MWST, Oscar Dominguez with wins over the Filipino veteran, Ramon Mistica 9-4, followed by wins over Johnny Kang 9-4, Dave Hemmah 9-5, and Ernesto Dominguez 9-0, to lead up to the hot seat match. The bottom half of the bracket was dominated by Hungarian sharpshooter, Attila Bezdan, with wins over Phil Prentice 9-3, Ramin Bahktiari 9-3, Melissa Herndon 9-4, and road companion Vilmos Foldes 9-4. The hot seat match was one sided as Attila came out firing balls in from all angles putting pressure on Dominguez. After a few failed safeties, Attila ran away with the match with a 9-5 score.

table timeMeanwhile on the losers side, Rodrigo Geronimo who lost his first match to Tang Hoa 8-4, had grinded through seven matches against Kevin May 9-3, Beau Runningen 9-7, Chris Fangre 9-3, Melissa Herndon 9-5, Tang Hoa 9-4, Ernesto Domiguez 9-4 and Ruben Bautista 9-7 to reach the 3rd place match against Oscar Dominguez. Rodrigo looked hungry to reach the finals and took a quick 5-1 lead over Dominguez. It wasnt until Geronimo missed a crucial 2 ball in the side pocket to widen the lead to 6-1 that Dominguez had a chance to take control of the table. Winning that game and then the next 3, Dominguez was able to tie it up 5. The following 6 games were each nail biters, with each player playing inspirational kick, jump and safety shots. Dominguez fell behind once again 7-5, but in his true fashion, showed a lot of heart to come back and win the match 9-7 sending him back to the finals to seek revenge on Bezdan.

The finals was one to be seen. Bezdan played flawless, only missing two balls the entire set. He pocketed every ball on the table as if they had eyes and controlled the cue ball at a top notch level. His break was also in top gear, leaving Dominguez helpless. Attila Bezdan went on to easily win the set 8-2. His victory was well deserved, as he was the best player on this day. All of us on the Mezz West State Tour will surely miss him next season and would like to congratulate him on his very great accomplishment.

This weekend’s event at “The Home Of Champions” opened by Chuck Markulis in 1988 is sure to carry the legacy of the great players who have come before them. The Mezz West State Tour brings talent to Hard Times Billiards with a different slant than usual. The players at this event will all have earned their place at the table, after a long haul of 11 events and all, very hungry to win.

A Little History – A Lot Of Thanks!

Tour founders, Oscar Dominguez and Desiree Rivera, whose announcement of the Mezz West State Tour immediately attracted local promoters, venues and product sponsors from conception to launch; they were able to officially sign 9 host venues whilst partners such as Fast n Loose, POV Pool and GoPlayPool went to work on other tasks in the background: Website, Live Streaming and Social Promotion. In a way, this was a convergence of events that could almost be likened to someone who wins 9-ball tournament: It took a whole lot of skill, a little bit of luck and just the right timing.

Mezz Cues and West State Billiards, ZAN Tips and Turtle Rack are to be applauded for providing resources to the events, which made the tour possible. With many thanks, each official tour stop brought with it $2,000 added money and the hosting venues received cues, cases and merchandise to attract local talent to play and register. Thanks also to Marty Carey (Marty Carey Jump Cue) and Steve Chaplin of Virtual Pool 4 who were able to come to the table, not only to compete in many of the stops, but also to provide additional funding for the live streaming of the events on POV Pool and On The Rail TV.

Break-Time Billiards Hosting Mezz West State Tour Season Finale!

Article: Daniel Busch

Last Chance to Qualify for the Mezz West State Tour!

This is it, Folks!

The Mezz West State Tour has staged the final destination of its inaugural season for 231+ registered competitors, who are attracting broad attention and writing the new history for cue-sports in America. Modesto, California, found in the heart of California’s northern Central Valley will probably see its largest billiards event in 10 years. Hosted by BreakTime Billiards at 304 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, CA 95354,  this 10-ball competition will be the final, ‘Top Gun’ qualifier played on 11, fully tuned 9 foot Diamond ‘pro-cut’ pool tables at 4-1/4″ pockets. The sports bar vibe at the 10,000 square foot venue comes with additional Diamond bar tables, huge 6 x 8 foot screens and, 11 taps of beer and some tasty bar food.

When asked about the Mezz West State Tour, BreakTime Billiards owner, Joe Gonzalez stated, “I’m thrilled to be hosting this event for Oscar and Desiree and to be a part of this great tour. Apart from the major tournaments in the country, the Mezz West State Tour has the potential to be very successful for the sport and I look forward to hosting more events in the following season as well.”

The Last Stand for ‘Top Gun’ Hopefuls

Everything depends on performance and attendance for those who currently threaten the current ‘Top 32’ names on the rankings list!

The Mezz West State Tour rankings will determine ‘who’ gets to play the Top Gun event in March of this year. With a prize fund that has grown to approximately, $7,000 thus far and open to 32 players, a ‘stand-by list’ will also be generated with the final rankings announcement, so that if any top 32 players cannot attend Top Gun, players in the next ranking position will qualify.

Watch Mezz West State Tour Matches on YouTube!

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 2.36.17 PMIn fact, we already know that Efren Reyes, ranked #28 is unable to qualify because he did not play enough events and Danny Gohkul, ranked #31 still needs one more event to qualify. This is good news and possibly bad for players like Melissa Herndon #33 and Anthony Ortega #34 who, in waiting for the final rankings announcement, would surely slip back in rankings after Modesto if they do not attend or play poorly. Likewise, we can think of almost 25 players who have full potential to steal a ranking position from the deep such as, Mark Whitehead #35, Art Garcia #36, Deo Alpajora #56, Chris Robinson #61 and many others. With such talent on the tour and a chance to win big, this stop becomes an absolute must for tour members.

This final stop should produce some great matches. Be ready to see everything from desperation, despair and glorious excitement as pool players stage their final assaults to earn a ‘Top Gun’ spot!

If the TOP GUN were today, who would qualify?

Raffles and Top Prizes!

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 4.05.34 PMThe Mezz West State Tour has had a regular tradition of raffling Mezz Cues and Cases at almost every stop on the tour in addition to a cash prize to the top finishing female/s. Along the way, MZWST also picked up the interest of Allen Hopkins, who has graciously sanctioned the #1 ranked player on MZWST to receive a free entry to the 2015 Allen Hopkins ‘Professional 10 Ball Event’ held annually at the Super Billiards Expo.

Stop #6 on the Mezz West State Tour headed south to the San Diego area of La Mesa, CA to On Cue Billiards. 96 players from all over California, Nevada, Arizona, and several international players were all in attendance for a chance to grasp their hands on piece of the $6,800 prize fund. Leading the top half of the bracket was Phoenix, Arizona native Tim Daniel. Tim had strong wins over Art Garcia, Kevin May, Ramin Bakhtiari, Victor Ignacio, and Chris Fangre all the way to the hot seat match. While on the lower half, Santos Sambajon Jr. slowly but surely snuck his way through players Mike Meeker, Al Garcia, Fach Garcia, Ernesto Dominguez, Tang Hoa, and Amir Shoshan setting up the hot seat match between Daniels and Sambajon. This match would prove to be a lob-sided one as Santos’ experience and shotmaking took the hot seat with a resounding 9-2 scoreline.

After an early defeat, Hungarian native Vilmos Foldes stormed through the losers bracket with 6 wins on the losers side. Tim Daniels finally stopped the former Junior World Champion in his tracks to settle for third place setting up a rematch in the true double elimination finals between Daniel and Sambajon.

*Special Edit and video clip from POV Pool!

*The biggest upset of the weekend happened between Vilmos Foldes and Tim Daniel, during this 3rd place match. Foldes, considered one of the favorites to win this tournament found himself struggling to keep up with the Tim Daniel who’s luck came just in time in this race to 9 match. This was a heart stopping moment for many in the room and left everyone speechless. A tough break for Vilmos, who took 3rd in this event. Take a look now at this clip, brought to you by POV Pool, commentators, Daniel Busch and Clyde Nooris:

The Finals: Santos Sambajon vs Tim Daniel!

Tim Daniel: © 2014 – Ashi Fachler

The packed house at On Cue was treated to a nail biting finals as Daniels managed to control the first set with uncharacteristic errors on behalf of the diminutive Filipino by a 9-4 score. Santos and Daniels battled toe to toe in the final and concluding second set with Daniels having a very routine out with only 3 balls left on the table. Upon pocketing the 7, Daniels left himself a slightly awkward angle which would prove costly as Daniels failed to manage the carom on the 9 correctly by scratching, only leaving the gift of shooting the 9 ball with ball in hand for Santos. The devastated Daniels consoled himself with runner up prize money of $1000 while Santos took home the title and $1500 first prize.
