The Mezz West State Tour completed stop #4 in beautiful Northridge, CA at Plush Pocket Billiards the weekend of September 27th and 28th with another excellent field of 91 players for our 9 ball event. Our gracious host, Steve Yi, opened his 20 pool table pool room and their staff worked tirelessly to accommodate the many players and fans in attendance.

Efren Reyes at Mezz West State Tour #4 playing Vilmos Foldes on POV Pool

The Mezz West State Tour has garnered a strong following and had several special guests in attendance. The legendary Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante came a few days early to the Los Angeles area before their departure to the Poplar Bluff, MO one pocket event and decided to give all the locals a treat with their amazing skills. In addition to the obvious world champions in attendance, several other world class players were in the field such as; Vilmos Foldes, Santos Sambajon, Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez, Ramon Mistica, John “Mr. 400” Schmidt along with WPBA pros Stacy Novak, Jenny Lee, and Melissa Herndon. The 91 player field was whittled down to 24 on Sunday morning and the crowd in attendance was in for a treat as high class 9 ball was demonstrated at a world class level. In a marquee match, Rodrigo Geronimo played a tough battle with Efren Reyes where a few uncharacteristic misses by Efren made the difference in the match. This led to Rodrigo playing Bustamante for the hotseat and Rodrigo kept his hot streak on the Mezz West State tour alive by once again being the man to beat on the tour.

Meanwhile on the one loss side, strong semi pro player Johnny Kang had another brilliant performance playing high caliber pool with his ultra aggressive style. It took both Efren and Bustamante to finally bring him down with a solid 4th place finish leaving the top 3 players all Filipino of Bustamante, Reyes, and Geronimo. Due to time constraints of catching an early morning flight to Missouri, the top three players played a shortened race leaving Reyes in 3rd, Bustamante in 2nd, and Rodrigo Geronimo again to win a Mezz West State Tour Stop. These classy professionals showed why they are some of the greatest players to ever live by playing at a level above the field. It was a pleasure seeing pool played at its finest and the fans were treated to a great show. Additionally, the Top Female $100 bonus was won by Melissa Herndon as she makes a comeback to the pool world and we could not be happier to have a champion person and player back in the mix with the guys.

Hard Times Billiards Bellflower

Hard Times Billiards, Bellflower CA

It’s called ‘The Home Of Champions’ for a reason folks! This years’ annual ‘Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament’ at Hard Times Billiards, sponsored by Mark Griffin of Cue Sports International will schedule the most stunning array of top professional players in it’s 17 year history. A handful of Britons, top American players and a virtual army of Filipino Pros are signed up for this, once again, filled field of 192 players. And lest we forget the large mob of ‘shortstops’ signed on, who on any given day, could give these guys a run for their money.

The A-List Pros to beat this year will consist of the following:

Ronnie Alcano, Darren Appleton, Francisco Bustamante, Sal Butera, Manny Chau, Oscar Dominguez, Ernesto Dominguez, Max Eberle, Corey Harper, Dave Hemmah, Warren Kiamco, Stevie Moore, John Morra, Rodney Morris, Dennis Orcollo, Alex Pagulayan, Jose Parica, Santos Sambajon Jr., Jayson Shaw, Louis Ulrich and Shane VanBoening!

Who Is Favored?

For the past week or so, Dennis Orcollo, Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan have been seen at Hard Times getting into action, playing the ghost, challenging hard-hitters with huge spots, just to keep in form and be ready for this event. Shane VanBoening has been playing alot also in Vegas, where he has just defeated Mike Dechaine in the TAR 31 Challenge Match, running 3 & 4 packs like a walk in the park! Francisco Bustamante & Scotland’s Jayson Shaw are hot off the grill from a recent, Accu-Stats Challenge, where neither player had more than a 2 game lead in a race to 21 but finally ending in a loss for Shaw! Max Eberle is also hitting well after defeating Dennis Orcollo in the finals at the Derby Classic, 14.1 Challenge. In addition, don’t forget Manny Chau, Corey Harper and Rodney Morris, who have all felt comfortable enough at Hard Times to chalk up some wins against players like Efren Reyes, Sal Butera and Louis Ulrich (Respectively).

One thing’s for sure…Our consecutive, 2 time winner of the ‘Swanee’, Alex Pagulayan has his hands quite full this time as the pro’s keep flocking from near and far.

October 11th – 15th, 2012 @ Hard Times Billiards, Sacramento

One of the most anticipated memorial tournaments in California rapidly approaches, with this year’s event boasting a whopping $6,000 added prize fund. The 5 day event consists of a 3 day, One-Pocket Tournament open to a field of 32 players and overlapped by a 3 day, 9-Ball tournament open to 192 players. This will be the 5th annual event since Chuck’s passing, which is expected to draw the likes of BCA, Hall Of Famers, Jose Parica and Francisco Bustamante, Rodney Morris, Amar Kang, Oscar & Ernesto Dominguez, Raj “The Hitman” Hundal, Dave Hemmah and not to mention, many ‘dark horse’ contenders from all over the U.S. Last year’s champions include Jose Parica in One-Pocket and Rodney Morris winning the 9-ball portion of the event. In 2010, audiences to the live streamed event were treated to a magnificent showdown between the two Philippine  giants, Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes.

The event is always open to all professional and amateur players and the staff at Hard Times Billiards has requested some of the industry’s most trusted servants to assist with the operations, such as the professional referee services and direction of Ken Shuman and Janet Okamoto. Hard Times, Sacramento Manager, Tony Torres with Brian La Flamme are also working with Hard Times, Bellflower in order to insure that registrations can be submitted at both locations with the additional help of Sam Kim and Marie Lim. Registration forms can also be downloaded below and mailed in.

Honoring the late, Chuck Markulis who passed away in 2008 at the age of 71, he was responsible for bringing some of the biggest billiard action to California after opening a chain of 4 pool halls in California named Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, San Diego, La Habra and in Sacramento. With the help of his friend and associate Jay Helfert, they designed and built Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA which drew players from all over the world to play in some of the most memorable tournaments of its time. The success of this venue quickly prompted Chuck to open the other locations, of which the Sacramento and Bellflower locations remain to this day.

Live Streamed Coverage!

The event will, once again be streamed live and for free by Andy Chen, who has worked tirelessly over the years to bring some of the best coverage of tournament action and other billiards related media to viewers all over the world. The live stream will, as always feature live commentary by Andy and other special guests which can be accessed at the following link:
