New Documentary Film Project – “From Hustler To Champion”

Messina and Thompson

Filmmakers: Phillip Messina and Dave Thomson

David Thomson, owner of Medium Pool – pool’s promotion and advertising agency, and Philip F. Messina – an award winning filmmaker, have joined forces to produce “From Hustler to Champion”, a documentary film profiling 20, plus, past and present, top pool players in the sport. From Strickland to Van Boening; The Black Widow, The Striking Viking, The Duchess of Doom; Reyes, Sigel, Varner, and Hall – anyone who has had any impact on pool is present.

“From Hustler to Champion” delves deeply into their lifelong passion for the game, how they became possessed by its difficulties and mysteries, with an almost addictive need to master it. The film, also, realizes that this mesmerizing game has never been given appropriate respect in the larger world of sports. One reason is that, despite pool’s worldwide popularity, it has been plagued by a controversial reputation—that shady world of sharks and hustlers in smoky pool halls—a common image seen in film and TV. Because of this, mainstream sponsors have shied away from support.

Sneak Preview: “From Hustler To Champion!”

Jeanette Lee Black Widow

For the first time, “From Hustler to Champion,” tells the untold story of these extraordinary men and women who have transcended that stigma to become legends. We unearth their individual struggles to survive, including those who chose the ritual of going on the road and living the gamblers’ perilous, high-wire-act and, finally, rising to become champions.

“From Hustler to Champion” gives you an intimate insight into their remarkable personalities, their family lives, passions, fears, and their uncanny ability to conquer the overwhelming pressure to triumph in a head-to-head arena sport. “From Hustler to Champion” is a passion project, a labor of love that’s been in process for over ten years while capturing many of the greatest players of the last 50 years. It is near completion. The Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign is to generate funding to complete the editing, purchase license clips, obtain pertinent music, titling and graphic elements–all the unseen expenses it takes to create a film suitable for mainstream broadcast.

Many of you know how they play, now you can find out how they think…and what’s in their hearts.

Trickshot players suspended

Note: Since publishing this article on this day, top world ranked WPA-APD player Andy Segal did an on-air interview with Mark Cantrill of American Billiard Radio. Listen to this interview now – Episode: “Higher On The Wire” @ 104:30 minutes!ABR Logo

From ‘Top’ to ‘Not’!

It looks like the players have received their answer to the letter that was sent to the World Pool Association – Artistic Pool Division. Since POV Pool’s original article on this subject was published, there have been some developments in the Artistic Pool community. The Player’s Board sent a letter to the owner of Jamaica Joe’s (venue for the upcoming Master’s Artistic Pool Championship) stating that several players would not be playing in upcoming events until certain issues dealing with the players and the WPA-APD were resolved. In this letter was also an apology for any inconvenience it may cause the event and an additional reminder not to use their names as part of the promotion for it.

After the WPA-APD was informed of this letter and spoke to the owner of Jamaica Joe’s, the WPA-APD President, Mark Dimick sent an email (on behalf of the APD Board) issuing a 3-year suspension from competing in future APD events to the following players: Nick Nikolaidis, Andy Segal, Gabi Visoiu, Abram Diaz and Dave Nagle. The email also states that after 3 years have elapsed, the APD board will be required to hold a vote for player reinstatement. Before this suspension is official, players are apparently eligible to appeal this decision with an appeal board. The five suspended players are part of a Player’s Board, and was responsible for the issuance of the letter to the Jamaica Joe’s, venue owner. Although the WPA-APD knew that the Player’s Board would boycott future events, the APD stated that, “Had nothing further happened, we probably could have eventually reached a common-ground without serious disruption.” However we at POV Pool would like to know then, why communication was not made between the WPA-APD board and the Player’s Board?

POVPool’s upcoming live streams and events!

It is said that all the players were contacted regarding these communications, and all but eight players are still seeking the change that they first asked in the letter to the WPA-APD. We have yet to speak to these players who have backed out of the “Player’s Union,” but we suspect that because the WPA-APD stated they are willing to come to a “common ground,” these players would back out of the “Player’s Union.” Without hearing from each player, we can only speculate, though.

In a similar case in 2013, Rodney Morris had voiced publicly some dislikes he had for Cue Sports International (CSI) and its owner, Mark Griffin. Morris was then indefinitely banned from any future CSI events. After a public and personal apology, Rodney Morris was at the 2015 US-Open hosted by CSI…so, we have to ask that, because of an apology letter to Jamaica Joe’s informing them of their intentions not to compete at the event, is a 3 year suspension appropriate for these players?

Stop #6 on the Mezz West State Tour headed south to the San Diego area of La Mesa, CA to On Cue Billiards. 96 players from all over California, Nevada, Arizona, and several international players were all in attendance for a chance to grasp their hands on piece of the $6,800 prize fund. Leading the top half of the bracket was Phoenix, Arizona native Tim Daniel. Tim had strong wins over Art Garcia, Kevin May, Ramin Bakhtiari, Victor Ignacio, and Chris Fangre all the way to the hot seat match. While on the lower half, Santos Sambajon Jr. slowly but surely snuck his way through players Mike Meeker, Al Garcia, Fach Garcia, Ernesto Dominguez, Tang Hoa, and Amir Shoshan setting up the hot seat match between Daniels and Sambajon. This match would prove to be a lob-sided one as Santos’ experience and shotmaking took the hot seat with a resounding 9-2 scoreline.

After an early defeat, Hungarian native Vilmos Foldes stormed through the losers bracket with 6 wins on the losers side. Tim Daniels finally stopped the former Junior World Champion in his tracks to settle for third place setting up a rematch in the true double elimination finals between Daniel and Sambajon.

*The biggest upset of the weekend happened between Vilmos Foldes and Tim Daniel, during this 3rd place match. Foldes, considered one of the favorites to win this tournament found himself struggling to keep up with the Tim Daniel who’s luck came just in time in this race to 9 match. This was a heart stopping moment for many in the room and left everyone speechless. A tough break for Vilmos, who took 3rd in this event. Take a look now at this clip, brought to you by POV Pool, commentators, Daniel Busch and Clyde Nooris:

The packed house at On Cue was treated to a nail biting finals as Daniels managed to control the first set with uncharacteristic errors on behalf of the diminutive Filipino by a 9-4 score. Santos and Daniels battled toe to toe in the final and concluding second set with Daniels having a very routine out with only 3 balls left on the table. Upon pocketing the 7, Daniels left himself a slightly awkward angle which would prove costly as Daniels failed to manage the carom on the 9 correctly by scratching, only leaving the gift of shooting the 9 ball with ball in hand for Santos. The devastated Daniels consoled himself with runner up prize money of $1000 while Santos took home the title and $1500 first prize.

OB to join forces with POV Pool

POV Pool welcomes OB Cues to its small family of sponsors and affiliate partners for the year 2014. Based in Plano, Texas – OB has been manufacturing high performance, low deflection shafts and cues since 2005.  In just the last 6 months they have doubled the size of their production facility to keep up with the growing demand for their shafts, Infinity Inlay Cues and the always popular OB Break Cue. The OB brand is used and recommended by many pool players, including such notables as Alex Pagulayan, Corey Deuel, Phil Burford and Charlie Bryant.

Daniel Busch of POV Pool had this to say about the new partnership “I am proud to represent the OB brand which, like POV Pool’s other affiliates are helping to raise our sport to the level of exposure that it needs. OB offers some of the highest quality products that money can buy and are endorsed and used by the some of the best players of our time. Like the Kamui Brand, which has been with POV Pool for over 2 years, I look forward to a long lasting relationship with the highly regarded, OB brand.” OB Director of Sales & Marketing Shane Sinnott stated that “Daniel is not just another streamer. The quality of his product is improving with every event that he does and with a large fan base on YouTube and a strong presence on the West Coast, this partnership with Daniel will provide some great exposure for our brand while most importantly, bringing more live streamed world class pool to the masses.”
