Northern California’s newest pool tour makes a strong debut!

A queue of 9 pool rooms on the west coast have agreed to host a string of tournaments dubbed, ‘The Pierce Custom Cues, NorCal Pool Tour’ in association with Jim Pierce Custom Cues. The rooms will host a mix of 9 and 10 ball tournaments that are formatted to attract multiple levels of players from the top pros, the colorful competitors and even the self-proclaimed ‘pool hustlers’. Boasting $1,000 added monies per event with a $65 entry fee per stop, The Pierce Custom Cues, NorCal Pool Tour features a slight ‘game’ adjustment which, is based on overall skill level. All player ratings determined by past performance and reputation in the pool community at various other events and tours. Most established, professional players will play to 10 games whereas, the lowest skilled player would play to 6 games, with an 8 game ‘intermediate’ level.

The NorCal Pool Tour kicked off it’s 2016 season on September 3rd & 4th at Edgie’s Billiards in Milpitas, CA; took in 90 players and was won by ‘Combination’ Jason Williams who, hails from Concord, CA. Edgie’s Billiards will also host the final stop after 8 more destinations that, will take us through to March of 2017. The Edgie’s ‘Finale Event’ will be open to any player who plays at least two of the 9 tour stops. All $15 registration monies are to be added to the prize fund of the ‘Finale Event’. Edgie’s Billiards in Milpitas has been in business for 23 years and have hosted multiple pool and billiards events including multiple, special exhibitions with Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, APA Tournament and regional playoffs and The 2012 California Classic (3-Cushion) Tournament Event.

More about the NorCal Pool Tour

The ‘Pierce Custom Cues, NorCal Pool Tour’ was originally conceived by a local, Bay Area pool player named Jaynard Orque who approached his friend, Jim Pierce, a cue-maker, about supporting and sponsoring a pool tour in the area. With Jim Pierce on board, things fell into place and Jaynard’s job very quickly began to take shape. Jaynard has taken on the monumental task of organizing, scheduling and coordinating all stops, arranging the sponsor packages and is taking a back seat from playing this year, in order to fill the shoes as the tour’s ‘official’ Tournament Director. Jaynard states, “Deep down, I am a pool player and would love to compete but, I feel that it’s my job as a promoter and organizer to focus on each event and to make sure that everyone involved is satisfied with the operations.” Hopefully in the future, we will get to see Jaynard compete as a player on this and other tours. It is no secret that he is talented enough to become one of the tour’s favorites and to win a few of stops. A big sacrifice for Jaynard Orque (Hats off, to you).

The goal of the tour is to promote the local billiard venues and players in the northern California region whilst, providing additional support and promotion to its sponsors. Each host venue has committed to posting $1,000 added money toward the prize fund/s, while tour sponsors provide merchandise support for giveaways to those in attendance. At each stop, Jim Pierce has handcrafted a special, player’s cue to be given away to one of the players or spectators in attendance.  Hustlin’ USA is providing custom ‘NorCal Tour’ shirts for sale, whilst Doug Montgomery’s ‘Unglove‘ company, Bain Mendoza’s ‘PiUS Promotions‘, AndyCloth USA and Len’s California Billiard Supply have provided additional support and tour-funding items.

Be sure to check these dates below and get your tips on for these great events coming up in the Bay Area of California – Thanks to Jaynard Orque, Jim Pierce, Hustlin’ USA, Unglove, PiUS Promotions and to all of the room owners who support these functions.

Golden Cue Billiards Sets the Stage for New World Billiards!

BIG-AL-LA-MODE-2015

Saturday – December 5th, 2015

The Golden Cue – South El Monte, CA

Golden Cue Logo

Saturday, December 5th, 2015 – A ‘Swan Song’ for New World Billiards
NWBLOGO

This Saturday, December 5th will be a special engagement for The Golden Cue Billiards club in South El Monte, California. A very special, 15th annual memorial tournament for ‘Big Al’, much loved and respected by SoCal pool players is always special of course, but not the only thing special about it. This event also sets the stage for the ‘final bow’ from New World Billiards… Yes, the 15th Annual, $1,500 added, ‘Big AL’ La Mode 9-Ball event will be New World Billiards’ final tournament before closing their books for good. This year’s annual shin-dig has a full field of 64 players, who’s names will ring a bell to anyone with over a decade of history in our community. The event will be streamed live on POV Pool, but to any locals out there who know these players personally you should jump in the car and get to Golden Cue Billiards. It just might be the last time we see these names in the same room all at once. The NWB handicapped format drew a very special tribe of passionate players which I’m not sure will cultivate again any time soon. Names like Tony/Phil/Carmine Sardo, Ed Sellers, Derek Kim, Wayne Pullen, Jerry Lin, Erwin Macapagal, Larry Bohn, Jenny Lee and more… These are some of the original players dating back to the defunct, USPPA organization, born in the late 90’s. If you’re looking for a story or two from these guys about pool in its heyday, you just might find it here on this day.

A short trip down memory lane: SOME OLD POSTERS WITH NWB

ALAMODE14 BIGDEAL BLOWERS

For those who didn’t know, ‘New World Billiards’ was the last remaining independent organization on the west coast of the United States to bring us handicapped 9-ball tournaments on 9-foot tables, playing for cash or added monies, without having to be part of a league. Accepting any players and rating them according to skill level; players could pick and choose any event/s they wanted to compete in without worry about being cut or eliminated from the rankings roster. The only requirement for membership was an annual $25 fee to be entered into the database and whatever their tournament fee was per event. Tony Annigoni’s, USPPA format was basically the starting point from which ‘NWB’ launched. Originally owned by Ron Wishnack and Ken Elton, their mission was to pick up where the USPPA left off but made a few tweaks to their handicapping, so as not to conflict with Tony’s original invention. Although NWB’s organization was solid and quickly migrated 99% of  Southern California’s USPPA players, it never did gain the traction that USPPA gained in the early 2000’s.

Fun Fact: One of POV Pool’s 1st streams was in December of 2011 for New World Billiards’, It was the 1st Annual BIG DEAL event. Wayne Pullen beat Jerry Lin in the finals!

Some Sordid History in Brief…

New World Billiards was formed in 2010 in response to the demise of the USPPA that was owned and operated by pool promoter, Tony Annigoni. NWB held many low cost, weekly tournaments at up to 6 venues in Southern California and quickly obtained over 150 members within its first month of forming. They also threw several annual tournaments which paid deep, guaranteed added monies with very little entry for its members who qualified to enter. These were the good guys… Ron Wishnack and Ken Elton committed and honest, they were loyal to the USPPA until problems began brewing. In 2010, a controversy surrounding the USPPA’s infamous 99 player ‘Reno’ event in, left its top 12 players without any payouts and an elusive promoter, almost impossible to contact or get a straight answer from for many months. The reaction from many players to Tony and the organization which, had a National reach and almost 1,600 registrations was to leave and therefore USPPA quickly lost 75% of its base. To date, the winner’s of the aforementioned tournament in Reno have not yet received full payment; even despite the 1st place winner, Jeff Gregory’s judgement of $5,000 against Tony Annagoni, to pay up.

On a slightly broader scale, the USPPA’s demise had a profound effect on the billiard community. It served as a catalyst to form New World Billiards in SoCal and Bob Beaulieu’s – World PPA with almost 1,600 players in NorCal; the handicapped, APA, TAP leagues and even Mark Griffin’s USAPL league also took root to adopt many of the estranged casual players and serious players seeking a new home to work on their games.

We hope you enjoy this final event from New World Billiards. Good luck to all players and Keep Loving Pool! Thank you to Ron Wishnack and Ken Elton and best of luck in your future endeavors!

Mezz West State Tour – Rev’ving Up For Fresno!

Diamond Billiards – Fresno, California

The Mezz West State Tour – Forges on!

After just 2 scheduled events of 12 in its first season, The Mezz West State Tour has quickly accumulated 122 members, with an official tour ranking and a desire to earn a spot in the season ending’s, ‘Top Gun” Finale Event of just 16 players in March of 2015. As the Tour prepares for its next stop this weekend at Diamond Billiards in Fresno, California it looks as though the membership should grow to see more new players, sparking not just local interest in winning a piece of the $2,000 added money and a place on the rankings list, the Tour’s third event has also signed on a handful of other popular names in pool like, Gerardo Jamito, Melissa Herndon, Brian Parks, Atila Bezdan and also the young Hungarian Pro, Vilmos Foldes, who has expressed a desire to live on the west coast permanently.

Getting Stronger!

This time, playing 9 Ball instead of 10-Ball, statistically so far, the field for the upcoming Diamond Billiards event is already a little stronger than tour stop #2 at Hard Times – Sacramento, with 5 professional players in the field and more expected. Sacramento’s Hard Times Billiards, which only took in 4 professional players last month saw the rise of Jaynard Orque, who defeated some of its strongest players to take 1st place and now holds a ranking of #4 on the tour. It’s a simple fact, that The Mezz West State Tour, which provides a ranking position to its members and slight handicap to pro players seeking competition is quickly inspiring pool players to bring their best game to fight for a place at the top of the rankings list.

During a brief phone conversation with me on Monday of this week, Tang Hoa, who holds position #11 on the ranking list said, “I want to continue playing this season to make it to the Top 16 and qualify for the ‘Top Gun’ event. I think I have a strong chance to make it in, but just to make sure, I’m going to Fresno this weekend. See you there, Buddy!”

Stop #3 – The Venue is Diamond Billiards!

Screen Shot 2014-09-10 at 12.11.18 PMDiamond Billiards was opened in the mid 1990’s by an industrious man named Dan Dadian who, at one point owned 5 locations in Central California and Reno, Nevada. Passing away in 2012, Dan is survived by his wife, Sheri Dadian and who now owns and operates Diamond Billiards located at 6460 Blackstone Avenue; the venue has been at the 6,000 square foot location for over 10 years. It’s also the home of the annual ‘Rocky Antennucci 9 Ball Tournament’ which takes place every Super Bowl weekend and will also host its 3rd Annual, ‘Dan Dadian Memorial Tournament’ in November of 2014. Serving food and beer, Diamond Billiards is a weekly host to APA Leagues, Michael Reddick and Chris Swart’s – California Cue Sports events and an ‘in-house’ league, playing on 6 x 7′ bar sized tables, and 12 x 9′ Rebco Tables and the new addition of one 9′ Diamond Table. Another noteworthy factoid about Diamond Billiards, which pool players always ask about is that the house tables there have recently been *’Dominguez’ed’ and that means that the upcoming Mezz/West State stop will be held to high standards of excellence and playing conditions.

Efren Reyes has just landed back in the United States and will be flying to New Jersey for the Super Billiards Expo, from April 4th – 16th. He plans to play the ‘Diamond Pro Events’ and possibly the Kamui 14.1 Challenge.

After a quick, couple of beatings of ’15 Ball Rotation’ on table 6 at Hard Times, Efren stated to me that he will be back in Southern California after April 7th and plans to stay in the country until April 30th; to which I replied, “You should come to Vegas with me and get some action! Everyone is over there, you know?”

More on that story, as it develops…

With a short stay in Bellflower, Efren will most likely play the Hard Times regular Sunday 9 Ball Tournament on March 31st, which will be streamed live on POV Pool’s Ustream Channel at 12:00 pm, Pacific Standard Time.
