Hard Times Billiards Bellflower POV_minimal_v

FREE AND LIVE – 10-Ball Double Header Action On POV Pool!

On April 2nd, POV Pool in association with Epic Billiards, PiUS Promotions and Hard Time Billiards will be in Bellflower this Thursday to provide free live coverage of two scheduled matches between 2 of the pool-world’s rising Filipino stars facing off against possibly 2 of the toughest opponents the west coast can bring to them.

Match #1 – Joven Bustamante vs Vilmos Földes / 2pm PST

What we have here is a good ol’ fashioned rematch, folks! Joven Bustamante (no relation) has been kicking ass and taking names in WPA events as far back as 2007. A very young looking 36 years old with enough firepower in his left-pinky to beat me with the 7 ball, Joven has been racking up wins in the U.S. since he touched down from the Philippines in February of this year; cashing in the Derby City 9 Ball, Jay Swanson Memorial, Chuck Markulis Memorial, CSI US Bar-Table Championships and recently taking 2nd place in the 25th Annual Andy Mercer 9 Ball Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Joven will face off against Vilmos Földes of Budapest, Hungary! Vilmos eats 9 Balls for breakfast and sleeps with with a loaded, Predator soft case under his pillow at night. He has been terrorizing the West Coast pool scene as of late, earning himself a #1 ranking on the Mezz West State Tour’s 11 stops in its 1st season. He has been invited by Allen Hopkins to compete in the upcoming Pro 10 Ball Event at this year’s Super Billiards Expo!

Word on the street is…Vilmos and Joven got into action 2 weeks ago at Pool Sharks Las Vegas in ‘The Pit’. In a nail-biting, Hill/Hill match, Vilmos walked away a winner and sent the ‘Corporation’ away to scrape for spare change at the bottom of their car seats for gas-money home. Now, fully reloaded and ready to strike back, Joven and hopes to regain his ‘Epic’ status as “The most dangerous pretty boy in the West!”

Match # 2 – Edgie Geronimo vs Rodney Morris / 6pm PST

What can we say about Edgie Geronimo? Friggin’ ridiculous? Future world champion? 37 year old pool phenom from Bulacan?  Recently sponsored and fully outfitted by Tiger Products, this February, 2015 – This Thursday, Edgie Geronimo will also be enjoying his latest promotion in the U.S. as ‘The guy the world thinks can beat, ‘Rocket’ Rodney Morris in an even game of 10-Ball!”. Edgie has reigned supreme amongst his peers this year, giving scores of pool players muscle cramps and cottonmouth with nothing less than a distant gaze. At the end of most days Edgie skips merrily along in life, pockets filled with everyone else’s money. And always, when asked about it later, Edgie insists he ‘just got lucky’ with about as much sincerity as Vanilla Ice watching your house while you’re on vacation.

Rodney  Edgie

Welcome Edgie Geromino to the world of professional pool! You have arrived and graduated to a new level of excellence where your luck could possibly run dry. If you can survive the thrusters of this Rocket that you are about to ride, then you will have truly convinced me that you really are something to be feared in the pool world! Rodney Morris has also just come off his 6th consecutive 10-Ball win at The Wyoming Open and with it, the recent arrival of his precious, baby boy name Zayden Rocket!. This Rocket is going to bring some turbulence your way, Edgie. I hope you have your spacesuit handy and your helmet on!

Sunday, March 22nd: Day 3

Day in Highlights:

With as many great players that were left in the tournament going into the final day, there were bound to be upsets!  Scott Frost knocked Mike Massey the first round of play in the day, to meet Joven Bustamente and defeat him.  In the second round of play on the winner’s side, Sal Butera met up with Jason Klatt.  On the hill, Klatt breaks in the 9ball to put Butera to the one-loss side.  While on the one-loss side, Mike Massey took out Max Eberle, Johnny Kang and Sal Butera.  Upset came when Joven Bustamante took out Shane VanBoening from the tournament, relinquishing the opportunity for VanBoening to take his fifth title.

The Hot Seat match began with an early lead for Scott Frost against Jason Klatt with a 3 – 0 lead.  While the Hot Seat match takes place, Joven Bustamante also takes a 3 – 0 lead against Mike Massey.  Joven blanks Mike Massey to knock him out of the tournament, exiting Massey at 4th place and Scott Frost beats Jason Klatt 6 – 2.  Jason Klatt could hold it together long enough and loses to Joven Bustamante.

The Finals bring a tight match up between Scott Frost & Joven Bustamante for a true double elimination.  The first match up starts with 2 – 2, head-t0-head match up.  Scott Frost hits the Hill first, but Scott Frost misses the 9, allowing for Bustamante to make it to the Hill.

Saturday, March 21st: Day 2

Day in Highlights:

The day began with Ernesto Dominguez getting knocked to the one-loss side, with a loss to Jason Klatt.  Following the 11am matches, Mike Massey played Shane VanBoening.  Mr. Massey was down 5  – 3, to come back hill/hill.  VanBoening’s break and he scratches, to give Massey ball in hand for the 1-9 combo.  Putting VanBoening to the one-loss side.  On the table next to that exciting match, Scott Frost was down 3 -1 to come back and beat Rodrigo “Edgie” Geronimo.  Tres Kane battled it out with Joven Bustamante, but lost to him and is now on the one-loss side.

Remaining at the end of Day 2: Winner’s Side: Scott Frost, Mike Massey, Sean Lane, Jason Klatt, Joven Bustamente, Dick Rice, Sal Butera and Jeff Schilder

One-Loss Side: Max Eberle, Brian Parks, Atilla Csorba, Johnny Kang, Donnie Branson, Tom Butler, Shane VanBoening and Edgie Geronimo

Friday, March 20th: Day 1

Day in Highlights:

Early on in the day, Shane Harvey puts Walter Glass (5th place in the Mercer last year) to the one-loss side.  Sal Butera beat Southwest Cues’ Al Lawrence.  Sal advances through the winner’s side, also beating Ismael Paez.  Edgie Geronimo also advances through the winner’s side to face Scott Frost tomorrow at 11:45am.  Shane VanBoening and Mike Massey make it past two rounds on the winner’s side and meet up tomorrow, also at 11:45am.  Tres Kane did not have an easy way through the winner’s side, but beat both Oscar Dominguez and Ray Skenadore.  And it won’t get easier because he faces 4th place Bar Box 9-ball Champion, Joven Bustamante.  Joe Cannella advances tomorrow on the winner’s side due to Max Eberle’s forfeit/no-show to his evening match.  Everyone advances to tomorrow where the action will heat up!

Mezz West State Tour: TOP GUN!

top gunAfter 11 events on the Mezz West State Tour, a total of 32 invited players came to Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA to compete in the year end event for its 12th and final event of Season 1. The invited players were chosen based off a points system based off the Camel Pro Tour rankings. The top players accumulated points based off their performances to play in a special year end event of $2000 added prize money plus the membership dues collected throughout the season which totaled to 5750 off of 231 total members. In addition, as a bonus, the top 16 ranked players did not pay an entry fee while the 17-32nd ranked players paid a standard $65 entry fee.

Rail ActionThe top half of the board was led by co founder of the MWST, Oscar Dominguez with wins over the Filipino veteran, Ramon Mistica 9-4, followed by wins over Johnny Kang 9-4, Dave Hemmah 9-5, and Ernesto Dominguez 9-0, to lead up to the hot seat match. The bottom half of the bracket was dominated by Hungarian sharpshooter, Attila Bezdan, with wins over Phil Prentice 9-3, Ramin Bahktiari 9-3, Melissa Herndon 9-4, and road companion Vilmos Foldes 9-4. The hot seat match was one sided as Attila came out firing balls in from all angles putting pressure on Dominguez. After a few failed safeties, Attila ran away with the match with a 9-5 score.

table timeMeanwhile on the losers side, Rodrigo Geronimo who lost his first match to Tang Hoa 8-4, had grinded through seven matches against Kevin May 9-3, Beau Runningen 9-7, Chris Fangre 9-3, Melissa Herndon 9-5, Tang Hoa 9-4, Ernesto Domiguez 9-4 and Ruben Bautista 9-7 to reach the 3rd place match against Oscar Dominguez. Rodrigo looked hungry to reach the finals and took a quick 5-1 lead over Dominguez. It wasnt until Geronimo missed a crucial 2 ball in the side pocket to widen the lead to 6-1 that Dominguez had a chance to take control of the table. Winning that game and then the next 3, Dominguez was able to tie it up 5. The following 6 games were each nail biters, with each player playing inspirational kick, jump and safety shots. Dominguez fell behind once again 7-5, but in his true fashion, showed a lot of heart to come back and win the match 9-7 sending him back to the finals to seek revenge on Bezdan.

Attila Bezdan in the Finals! Copyright 2015 – POV Pool Media

The finals was one to be seen. Bezdan played flawless, only missing two balls the entire set. He pocketed every ball on the table as if they had eyes and controlled the cue ball at a top notch level. His break was also in top gear, leaving Dominguez helpless. Attila Bezdan went on to easily win the set 8-2. His victory was well deserved, as he was the best player on this day. All of us on the Mezz West State Tour will surely miss him next season and would like to congratulate him on his very great accomplishment.

This weekend’s event at “The Home Of Champions” opened by Chuck Markulis in 1988 is sure to carry the legacy of the great players who have come before them. The Mezz West State Tour brings talent to Hard Times Billiards with a different slant than usual. The players at this event will all have earned their place at the table, after a long haul of 11 events and all, very hungry to win.

A Little History – A Lot Of Thanks!

Tour founders, Oscar Dominguez and Desiree Rivera, whose announcement of the Mezz West State Tour immediately attracted local promoters, venues and product sponsors from conception to launch; they were able to officially sign 9 host venues whilst partners such as Fast n Loose, POV Pool and GoPlayPool went to work on other tasks in the background: Website, Live Streaming and Social Promotion. In a way, this was a convergence of events that could almost be likened to someone who wins 9-ball tournament: It took a whole lot of skill, a little bit of luck and just the right timing.

Mezz Cues and West State Billiards, ZAN Tips and Turtle Rack are to be applauded for providing resources to the events, which made the tour possible. With many thanks, each official tour stop brought with it $2,000 added money and the hosting venues received cues, cases and merchandise to attract local talent to play and register. Thanks also to Marty Carey (Marty Carey Jump Cue) and Steve Chaplin of Virtual Pool 4 who were able to come to the table, not only to compete in many of the stops, but also to provide additional funding for the live streaming of the events on POV Pool and On The Rail TV.
