Kamui, Simonis & “Team Mexico” Pitch In For Team Rubicon

John Bertone of Kamui Tips, Ivan Lee of Simonis Cloth with Oscar and Ernesto Dominguez (AKA “Team Mexico) donated their time, supply, and service for a great non-profit organization called Team Rubicon. Team Rubicon headquartered in Los Angeles was founded by Jake Wood and William McNulty. TR unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with medical professionals to rapidly deploy emergency response teams into crisis situations.

John Bertone Owner, Kamui Tips.com, reconnected with Cal Verdin 3 years ago prior to Cal’s retirement from the Army. Both Cal and John went to the same high school together Class of ‘90. John has been a true supporter of our military forces and has been seeking ways that he can help by involving the billiard industry.

“ I have been seeking some productive ways to giving back to the men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedom and for what our country stands for. Team Rubicon is a great organization to get behind because they are giving our men and women veterans an opportunity to continue using their skills towards a positive and productive cause.” stated John Bertone of http://www.KamuiTips.com

Ivan Lee, President/CEO, Iwan Simonis Incorporated was contacted by John Bertone about the Team Rubicon Brunswick pool table laying in pieces without felt. John and Ivan share a common feeling about our service men and women and decided together to split the costs of getting the TR pool table up and running.

“Simonis is proud to help Team Rubicon because they are so active in helping people in need. Utilizing veteran’s skills to respond quickly and efficiently to crisis situations around the world is commendable.” stated Ivan Lee of http://www.IwanSimonis.com

Cal Verdin, a 20 year Army Veteran, a fan of pool, volunteers his time at Team Rubicon in Los Angeles. His specialties in the field during his 20 years in the Army are now a part of assisting people who are in need.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank John Bertone and Ivan Lee for helping Team Rubicon get the felt for our Brunswick pool table that was donated to us and special thanks to the “engineers” (Oscar and Ernesto Dominguez) who reassembled it! The volunteers of TR have a predisposition for selfless service with the skills we possess and the training that has been provided to us. Not only do we feel compelled to work hard but also a strong desire to relax and play hard as well. The newly renovated pool table you have provided us at the Team Rubicon headquarters allows us to unwind and bond! So again, thank you my friend and I look forward to you swinging by anytime for a game or two. Let us here at HQ show you the skills that us veterans have on a pool table!”, stated Cal Verdin of Team Rubicon.

July’s Hard Times 1st Sunday To Be Streamed Live!

POV Pool is returning once again to Hard Times for the seventh time this year to stream the 1st Sunday 9-Ball Tournament which is faithfully organized and directed by Marie Lim.

Marie stated that, “Due to overwhelming support for the Dan Dadian Memorial Tournament in Fresno, our 1st Sunday in June was a relatively low turnout of 41 players. Our next ‘1st Sunday’ even in July seems to be wide open, and since there will be a straight pool qualifier here on July 7th & 8th for the Predator World 14.1 event happening in New York, we may see a higher attendance than usual.”

Last month, Oscar Dominguez and Ramon Mistica found themselves battling it out for 1st place in a nail-biting, Hill/Hill match on Table 6, “The Devil Table”.

Watch that match here.

Richard Grenier Reigns As Stix Billiards’ 2012, One-Pocket Champion!

Early Morning: June  17th, 2012

Richard Grenier AKA “One-Pocket Rich” manages to defend his One-Pocket title as a 2-time Champion of the Joe Martin Sponsored, One-Pocket Event which was held at Stix Billiards in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

“Man I had to play champions all the way through this thing!”, exclaims Rich who started off his day beating Victorville’s John Schmidt, the legend – Jose Parica, tough Hard Times player – Larry (Motto), Wayne Pullen and then finally onto the final match to play Oscar Dominguez who had just finished an astounding 4 and a half hour match with Santos Sambajon.

“My toughest match was with Larry who had me 2-1 and after I caught up with him I had a chance to close it out when he scratched and all I needed was two balls but then I scratched.”

Luckily for Rich, Larry didn’t close out either and after a final 25 minute battle, Rich was able to eliminate Larry and move on to Wayne Pullen who also plays regularly out of Santa Monica’s House Of Billiards establishment.

A big thanks goes out to Alex and all the staff of Stix Billiards for holding the event which hosted 35 players and a plethora of railbirds. Thanks also to long-time supporter and sponsor of the event, Joe Martin who added the $1,000 to the prize fund which attracted players from SoCal’s best pool halls which include, Gary’s Victor Billiards, Stix in Ventura, Butera’s Billiards, Santa Monica House Of Billiards, Hard Times Billiards – Bellflower, and even Danny K’s in Orange, CA.

POV Pool managed to stream 6 matches will are being posted to YouTube. POV Pool would also like to thank, Frank Almanza, Jerry Matchin, Wayne Pullen, Melissa Herndon, Eddie Assisten, Marie Lim and Eddie Cohen for taking the time out to join us in the booth for their fine commentary on these matches.
